Caeris

The longer Caeris listened, the louder the forest spoke. 

He slid between tree trunks, fluid as silk. The magic had always been that way: effortless. Gliding. His behemoth size didn’t matter, nor his fiery scales or scalding breath. The forest served its creatures, and Caeris was a creature of the wood as much as fire.

Ears alert, he listened beyond murmuring trees, which crescendoed as he meandered by, listening more intently than ever before. Sometimes, amongst the voices, he heard a familiar, feminine presence. His goddess, Deasylva. She hadn’t spoken in several days.

When the forest lay calm and quiet, without a single tumble or pinecone or hushed branch, he thought of his sire, Luteis, who loved pacific days.

This short story was written as part of the Alkarra Awakening Kickstarter campaign. Backers pledged enough to earn a fan-requested short story, and this is what resulted!
